Муниципальные выборы в Ливане
Nabatieh (Lebanon), May 24 (EFE).- Plagued by destruction and with almost its entire population still displaced after the war with Israel, the border villages of the zero line went to the polls on Saturday in alternative locations, in what they see as a message of resilience to the neighboring country. In about half of these hard-hit areas, mayors and municipal councils were directly elected unopposed, while the population of the remaining areas had to travel to other locations in the south on Saturday to cast their ballots, sometimes many kilometers away. INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS, IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE: Hussain Farhad, mayoral candidate for the Communist Party in his village: “It would have been nice if the elections had taken place in our village, but there is no security because of the entity next to us (Israel), that is the main problem. If there was no destruction, it would have helped as well.” Aida Ali Ibraheem, from Blida: “The war was not easy for us, but despite this destruction and pain we came back, we will continue and we came today to exercise our democratic right. Because of our personal convictions, both human and national, that this is my land and soil, these are precious.” “In the last two days, Israeli attacks aimed at scaring us did not prevent us from coming and voting, because it is our right to do so as Lebanese citizens.”

Nabatieh, Lebanon, May 24 (EFE).- Several hundred thousand Lebanese are called to vote on Saturday in the municipal elections in the south of the country, the first since the war with Israel devastated much of the region. At noon the turnout is barely 25%, according to official data. These elections are considered a sort of referendum for the Shiite group Hezbollah. SOUNDBITES OF MOHAMMAD SAEED YOUSEF KAMAL OF NABATIEH: 1- “The percentage so far exceeds about 20% and we are waiting after prayer time for people to come more. They will have eaten, slept, prayed and rested. From now until 19:00 there should be more people”. 2. “The elections here in Nabatieh carry more than one message, first of all, national unity. We in Nabatieh are not lazy, even though we went through destruction and hardship and displacement we are still clinging to our country Lebanon which is one and united.”
